Most folks know Maddox 684 – he is a legend – but the Brahman breeder in me loves to talk cattle so here is my spiel… When the Magic Ranch first started, I called breeders I respected and got their opinions on matings. Judd Cullers of Heritage Cattle Co. told me it’s all there in the pedigrees. Look for niche matings that work. One of those matings that can be seen time and again in top herds is +Maddox 684 over +JDH Karu Manso 800. Our herd was heavily Karu-influenced so we rolled the dice. We were looking for show ring fancy, name brand, and performance in terms of growth and carcass merit. That’s a heavy order, but Maddox delivered every time, and on top of that, the calves were consistently low birth weight. He cleaned up our large, coarser cattle, adding big flat tops, clean underlines, docility and lots of eye appeal. So, we invested in a lot of Maddox semen right out of the gate. We used him extensively in our AI and embryo program. His calves were nothing short of phenomenal.
